School Board Members

St Edmund’s College Canberra is honoured to have talented and dedicated people on the School Board. There are 10 members altogether, including three ex-officio members who are on our current staff: Daniel Lawler (Principal), Darren Leech (Deputy Principal Acting) and Samantha Brady (Director of Services). All non-staff members have a personal link with St Edmund’s, some are Eddies Old Boys, and some currently have sons attending the College. The Board members have diverse skills and expertise in a range of fields including finacial, legal, education, business, recruitment, management, marketing, writing, project management and workplace health and safety.

Br Brian Berg is a Christian Brother who was the former Deputy Provincial of the Christian Brothers' NSW/ACT Province. He has taught in Australia and South Africa and was the Principal of St Leo's College Wahroonga and St Dominic's College Penrith. At present he is Parish Pastoral Associate of St Bede's Parish Braidwood, NSW.

Michael and his brothers Paul and Stephen are St Edmund's old boys.  He is married to Catherine; their sons Patrick and Michael are Old Boys. Michael has been a board member since 2010 and was appointed Chair in 2014. Michael is National Director of the Australian Republic Movement. He and Catherine live in Waramanga with the younger of their five children.

Mr Daniel Lawler commenced as Principal at St Edmund’s College in 2015. Prior to this he was Principal of St Paul’s College, Gilles Plains SA from 2008, an EREA school educating boys from 5 to 18 years of age. Between 2002 and 2007 Daniel held the position of Deputy Principal at Blackfriars Priory School in Adelaide, a Catholic school for boys run by the Dominican Friars. He has also held positions in other Catholic schools in South Australia and Queensland. Daniel has degrees in Education, Theology and English and is married with three sons.

Mr Darren Leech commenced at St Edmund’s College in 2011 as the Head of Religious Education. He has also held other acting roles of Deputy Principal and Director of Pastoral Care during his time at the College. Prior to this he was Head of Religious Education for two years and Director of Pastoral Care for three and a half years at St Stanislaus’ College in Bathurst. Between 2004 and 2005 Darren held positions across Kindergarten to Year 6 in a parish primary school in Bathurst with the majority of time being spent on Kindergarten. He has degrees in Education and Linguistics, and is married with two sons.

Nichole Overall is a freelance writer, communications consultant and author, with a particular interest in creatively encouraging boys to engage with the written word. Nichole has worked as a journalist, in public relations and marketing, and also spent a number of years as a small business owner. She is the mother of one current and one past St Edmund’s boy, lives in Queanbeyan - a place for which she has a strong affection - and is a keen sportswoman.

Frank Lo Pilato has been a Board Member since 2014. He is married to Anna and their son Andre is currently in Year 9. Frank is a Chartered Accountant who has been working for RSM Bird Cameron for 29 years. He is currently the Managing Partner and specialises in Turnaround and Insolvency. Frank's brothers Gino and Tony also attended St Edmund's. He has a son at St Edmund’s.

Stephen Buckman was appointed to the Board in 2016 and is currently also Chair of the Education Sub-Committee.  He retired from the ANU in 2015 after 33 years in the Research School of Physics and Engineering, and he finished his ANU career as Director of the Research School from 2012-2015.  His research specialisation is in Atomic Physics, and he is currently also a member of the Board of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology organisation (ANSTO).  He has recently been appointed as Executive Director of the Physical Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics and Information Sciences Programs at the Australian Research Council. He has two sons at St Edmunds, Jackson in Year 10 and Lewis in Year 9.

Christa joined the Board in 2016. She is married to Michael and their two sons are St Edmunds old boys (Jake – class of 2012, and Ben – class of 2015).  Christa is a Chartered Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor and has been working with KPMG for 27 years.  She is the National Partner in Charge of KPMG’s Policy, Program and Evaluation service line and delivers consulting services to a range of Australian Government agencies including the Departments of Education, Employment, Health and Prime Minister and Cabinet.  Christa is a Director on the Board of KPMG Executive Search and Selection and was formerly on the NSW Catholic Education Commission’s Resource and Funding Policy Committee.

Lara lives with her husband Tim and their five teenage & young adult children in Murrumbateman where Tim is CEO and Chief Winemaker of Clonakilla Wines. Lara has training in Theology, Education and Management and has worked variously as a youth minister, secondary teacher, public servant and political staffer. Lara currently works for the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn as Marriage, Family and Relationships Co-ordinator bringing relationship education programs into primary schools and high schools.
