Information Technology

St Edmund's College offers students 2 well equipped computing resource centres. Both are equipped with PCs. These labs also have roof mounted projection facilities for use in instruction and presentations. The addition of DVD players and speakers allow these labs to be used as multimedia centres.

Students of St Edmund's College are offered 3 courses: Information Technology T/V (Yrs 11 & 12), Computer Operations A/V (Yrs 11 & 12) and Computing Studies (Yrs 9 & 10).

Information Technology (T/V) Years 11 and 12

Information Technology is both a Tertiary Course and a Vocational Course aimed at students who:

  • Seeking entrance into University
  • Are seeking a career in the Information Technology Industry
  • Require a foundation of IT skills and knowledge that can be built on as the need demands

The format of our teaching programs encourage each student to learn by discovery rather than a series of formal lectures.

The course is composed of eight term length units and vocational placements.

The course Information Technology offers students the opportunity to secure a Certificate I & II in Information Technology.

Individual term length units may include:

  1. IT Concepts: This fast paced introductory course exposes students to a variety of computer applications.
  2. Digital Editing: Students work with 2D digital editing applications to create both artistic and commercial images. Students may also have the opportunity to record, mix and produce sounds and music.
  3. Digital Graphics and Animation: Each student will create two short animated sequences using graphics and animation software. Projects include
  4. Advanced Animation: Using industry standard graphics and animation software, this unit extends each student's animation skills as they create a commercial animation product such an E-music cards and TV advertising sequences. 3D animation is explored through a project asking students to produce a sci-fi sequence.
  5. Relational Database Usage: Students design, build and implement relational databases and doing so acquire a comprehensive range of skills and knowledge in relational database management.
  6. Web & Multimedia Integration: Budding web page designers and programmers will find this unit particularly valuable. Using pure HTML code and authoring software, students construct multi-page web sites integrating using frames and style sheets. Multimedia elements such as sound, video and graphics are also introduced.
  7. Web and Multimedia Integration: Students design, construct and manage a WWW site integrating multimedia elements such as sound video and graphics.
  8. Programming Design & Concepts: Students design a variety of programming techniques using the C++ language. In the process they develop skills and understanding of programming design and concepts.

Computer Operations (A/V) Years 11 & 12

Computer Operations is both an Accredited Course and a Vocational Course aimed at students who:

  • Are seeking a career in the Information Technology Industry.
  • Require a foundation of IT skills and knowledge that can be built on as the need demands

Computer Operations offers students the opportunity to secure a Certificate I in Information Technology.

A practical study of the ways in which information technology can be used as a tool in the solution of problems in many areas of contemporary society, Computer Operations focuses on the selection of appropriate software to meet particular needs and develops skill and confidence in the use of a variety of software applications

The format of our teaching programs encourage each student to learn by discovery rather than a series of formal lectures.

Computer Operations is composed of eight term length units and vocational placements. The course is taught in eight individual term long units and the following topics are addressed:

Using the Computer and Desktop Publishing: Two units that introduce students to keyboard skills and various IT concepts and applications including word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Desktop publishing skills are developed along with an awareness of occupational health and safety issues related to the IT environment.

Commercial Spreadsheets: Students enrolled in this unit will become familiar with the use of spreadsheets to create and modify worksheets incorporating mathematical, statistical and financial functions. Charting various types of information will also be examined.

Visual Presentations: This unit will enhance student's ability to create various presentations for entertainment, sales, training and education. Focus will be given both to computer projections as well as presentations for the Internet.

Database Fundamentals: Students design, build and implement a database solutions and in doing so acquire a range of skills in database management. This unit considers both the flat file and relational database.

Developing Animations and Graphics: During this unit each student discovers the history and theory of animation. They have the opportunity to create two short animated sequences using

Event Driven Programming and Programming Project: Students will create simple applications with a graphical user interface. They will also develop a program, using an appropriate programming language to construct a solution to a situation of their choice.

Computing Studies (Year 9 or 10)

Computing Studies is offered as an elective to students in Year 9 and Year 10. This one year long program is designed not only to expose students to a range of commercial applications but it also offers students a practical study of the ways in which information technology can be used as a tool in the solution of problems in many areas of contemporary society.

The format of our teaching programs encourage each student to learn by discovery rather than a series of formal lectures.

Computing Studies students are challenged by projects which test their word processing, desktop publishing, and digital editing skills. For example, one project asks students to publish a User's Guide to an interactive adventure game. Their ability to manipulate statistical and financial data is developed through the use of spreadsheets. Computing Studies students design, build and implement flat file and relational databases and doing so acquire a comprehensive range of skills and knowledge in relational database management.

Presentation skills are developed and enhanced as students are exposed to the finer points of the industry standard electronic presentation package PowerPoint. Students are asked to produce both linear and interactive information kiosks whilst simultaneously discovering the inner workings of the computer.

A new addition to the course is creating animation and multimedia presentations using Flash MX.

Students programming and design techniques are developed and tested with a term dedicated to HTML programming and Web design.
