Dance/Drama
The Drama department at St Edmunds College offers an area of study that is in line with the Edmund Rice Philosophy and the broad education that the college offers to its students. The subject of drama is offered to all students across the levels of middle school, high school, and senior college.
Middle School and High School
In terms of structure, drama at St Edmunds aims to teach students how to prepare drama projects on given themes or topics that explore ideas and feelings. Students learn to select, and combine dramatic elements using a range of skills and techniques.
In years 9 & 10 students continue along the strands of creating, making and presenting drama as in middle school with a stronger emphasis on detail, style, and dramatic forms. Putting drama in the past and present contexts means students are able to experiment with style, and manipulate the production and performance elements for various audiences. As well as the practical skills students learn, the art criticism section of the course allows students to develop a language in this area, so they can talk and write aesthetically about drama in past and present contexts.
Senior College
In years 11 and 12 the college offers Theatre Studies at a Tertiary and Accredited level. Students explore issues, concepts, and themes integrating more advanced technical and structural elements by devising their own, and performing other playwrights work, for various audiences. Through out the course there are various trips to the theatre and students further develop their critical and research skills by reflecting on meanings and values associated with drama experiences, as well as the social and cultural perspectives constructed in Theatre.
The link below shows an example of Year 11 and 12 Drama work from the Acting For Camera course. Students created their own short film entitled "School Break". In pairs the students devised a 3 short films, in a genre of their choosing, detailing their escape from a school.
