Art

Our Philosophy

It is our ambition to provide opportunities for our boys to make artistic works that represent a range of ideas including social, cultural, political and personal points of view. We want our students to recognise and value how different opinions and views about the world are communicated in artistic works from different times and places, including that national identity, spirituality, religious beliefs, traditions, stereotypes, gender issues, politics, cultural identities and artistic practices. Our teaching practice is centred on making artistic expressions that become images, signs, symbols, codes and conventions that communicate to an audience the intentions of the author.

Our students work collaboratively and learn to work cooperatively and to consider the responses of others, and respect other points of view in relation to artistic expression providing opportunities for students to reflect upon their personal lives; and then externalise emotions pertaining to the issues of modern and contemporary Australian society in which the student interacts.

We believe students should learn that making artistic works is a way to interpret and communicate different ideas, issues and interests about the world. Situated in the sunny rooms looking onto the quadrangle - the Visual Art department is a warm, lively and creative place to be.

Whilst many schools in the ACT struggle to convince boys to study Visual Art, St Edmunds has healthy enrolments and caters for boys with a keen interest in visual arts, to those wishing to pursue a career in the art and design industry.
